Students who have obtained not less than 60 per cent of Marks in Mathematics, Science & Social Science in the IX Std., annual examination and now studying in the X Std., are alone eligible to appear for the N.T.S. examination. No parental income is fixed for applying the examination.
In the month of October wide publicity is given in the Dailies and Medias. At the first instance prescribed printed application are sent from this Department to all the Chief Educational Officers, District Educational Officers, Inspector of Matric Schools, C.B.S.E., Board, Kendra Vidyalaya and all the Regional offices of Government Examination in order to enable the institutions to get the application easily and quickly in Tamil Nadu.
The purpose of the scheme is to identify talented students and nurture their talent. It covers areas like Science, Social Science, Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law. The scheme is open to students of Indian nationality. It helps students to proliferate their mental level and also helps them to sharpen their minds.
NTSE is conducted by NCERT for the students of Class X. The exam is conducted at two levels: Stage-I (State Level) and Stage-II (National Level). The NTSE paper consisting of Paper-I: Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Paper-II: Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

The question paper is divided into two sections – Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT).
MAT: The questions in this section are designed to judge the ability to think, power of reasoning, ability to judge, evaluate, visualise in space, etc. Questions are asked from series, analogies, pattern perception, classification, coding-decoding, problem solving, hidden figures, block assembly, etc.
SAT: The questions in this section is further divided into Science, Mathematics and Social Sciences.
Note: SAT and MAT questions are asked in both NTSE Stage-1 and Stage-2.
Mode of Exam: NTSE is a pen-and-paper based (offline) test.
Exam Duration: Candidates are given 4 hours to complete the paper.
Language for Question Paper: You have the option to take the paper in Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu or Urdu.
Question Type: The questions are of MCQ type with 4 alternatives per question.
Marking Scheme: Candidates will be awarded +1 for a correct response. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
Qualifying Marks:Qualifying marks for candidates of General category is 40% in each paper. For SC, ST and physically handicapped 32% in each paper.
